When Margaret tied with Lanny Bassham they shot the same overall score but there was a tie breaker in place which was the last 10 shots in kneeling position.  Lanny had a higher score on those shots.  So he won the tie breaker.  The judges didn&#039;t just give the gold medal to the man - there was a tie breaker rule in place already and that was followed.  Duplicate Gold Medals was requested to be awarded but the request was denied. 

In the awards ceremony Lanny brought Margaret onto the top tier platform with him to take the National Anthem together as teammates (both Americans) and as winners.  This is the only time in history this has happened.  She deserved the Gold as well as Lanny but the rules were in place for the tie breaker.</description>
